Volocopter Applied for “Type Certificate” in USA

German company Volocopter, which has been working on urban air transportation for a long time, applied for a “Type Certificate” in the USA with vehicle VoloCity.

The application made to the American Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on December 22, 2020.

In case the application is accepted, Volocopter will have taken a very important step towards entering the US urban air transport market.

Volocopter targets cities such as Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Washington D.C with its air taxi vehicle named VoloCity.

Volocopter had previously made the same application to the European Aviation Safety Authority (EASA).

It is aimed to complete the approval process within 2-3 years and start commercial flights.

In addition, the company has achieved a first in the world in the eVTOL (electric aircraft capable of vertical take-off and landing) segment by obtaining the “Design Organization Approval”, the permission required to design and manufacture an aircraft, from EASA.

Founded in 2011 by Stephan Wolf and Alexander Zosel, Volocopter is currently operating in offices in Bruchsal, Munich and Singapore.

Among the investors of the venture, which has managed to raise 122 million Euros of capital so far, Daimler, Geely, DB Schenker, Intel Capital, Team Europe, btov, Micron, Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group, TransLink Capital (Japan Airlines and Sompo Japan Insurance), MS&AD Ventures and Manta Ray.
