Black Triangle on the Wall of Aircraft Cabins

Have you ever noticed that the small black triangle on the passenger cabin wall of aircraft manufactured by Airbus?

Well, what does this triangle do, you know?

Some say this point has to do with the balance of the plane.

According to another opinion, if the doors are not opened in the event of an accident, the rescue teams would cut the fuselage of the plane at this point and evacuate the passengers.

In yet another theory, it is claimed that when flight attendants began serving in-flight catering, they refer to the seat where this point is.

What Is the Black Triangle on the Wall of Aircraft Cabins?

None of the things listed above explain the true function of the black triangle.

In fact, this small black triangle indicates the best way to observe the wing from inside the aircraft in the Airbus family. You can see if there is any problem on the wing and whether the slat, flaps and other parts on the wing are working properly by looking through the window that corresponds to this alignment. In cases where anti-icing is applied, it is best seen from this point whether the de-icing fluid adequately covers the wing. Again, in Airbus A300 type aircraft, when it was not sure that the flight gear was opened, it was possible to see the position of the wheels by looking at this point.

Let’s add that there are two observation points per wing in Airbus A320 type aircraft.

The seat where the wing is best observed is called the “William Shatner Chair”. The starting point for this is the episode of the famous TV series The Twilight Zone called “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet“. In this episode, the protagonist of the story, while travelling by plane, sees a Gremlin outside and struggles with it. But apart from that, no one of the other passengers on the plane can see the Gremlin. So in a way, the outside is best seen from the seat William Shatner was sitting on.
